Will a Hand-Painted Tote Bag Last? The Truth About Paint, Protection & Durability

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"Will the paint wash off?"

It's a fair question. After all, a tote bag is meant to be carried—not displayed on a shelf. It travels to the beach, the farmers market, lunch with friends, and weekend getaways. It needs to stand up to everyday life.

The good news is that a well-made hand-painted tote is designed to do exactly that.

The durability of a hand-painted tote isn't determined by the paint alone. It's the result of careful preparation, quality materials, proper finishing, and thoughtful care. Here's why those steps make all the difference.

It Starts Before the First Brushstroke

A durable hand-painted tote begins long before the artwork is painted.

Every jute tote I use is carefully inspected before painting begins. The handles and areas that shouldn't receive paint are masked, and the surface is prepared with a coat of gesso to create a smooth, stable foundation for the artwork.

Taking the time to properly prepare the bag helps the paint adhere beautifully and creates a stronger finished piece.

Quality Materials Make a Difference

Not all hand-painted tote bags are created using the same materials or techniques. Every artist develops their own process, and the quality of the finished piece depends on each step along the way.

For my tote bags, I use professional acrylic paints combined with fabric medium to help create vibrant color while maintaining flexibility on the fabric. Each layer is allowed to dry thoroughly before moving on to the next stage.

Using quality materials is one of the reasons a hand-painted tote can remain beautiful through years of everyday use.

Every Layer Needs Time

One of the biggest misconceptions about hand-painted artwork is that it's finished in a single afternoon.

In reality, creating one tote is a multi-day process.

After the tote is prepared, the background is painted and allowed to dry before the artwork begins. Once the painting is complete, I carefully add embellishments chosen specifically for each design before applying the final protective finish.

Each stage requires patience, and rushing the process would compromise the finished result.

Protection Is Just as Important as Paint

Once the artwork is complete, every painted surface is protected with a glossy resin finish.

This protective layer helps preserve both the painted artwork and the dimensional embellishments while creating the rich finish that has become part of my signature style.

The resin is then allowed to cure overnight before the tote receives its final inspection and finishing touches.

That curing time is an important part of the process—and one that can't be rushed.

Proper Care Helps Your Tote Stay Beautiful

Even the highest-quality artwork benefits from proper care.

While my totes are designed for everyday enjoyment, a few simple habits will help keep them looking their best.

I recommend:

  • Wiping the painted surface with a soft damp cloth when needed.
  • Avoiding machine washing or soaking the tote.
  • Storing it in a dry place when not in use.
  • Handling it with the same care you would give any handcrafted artwork.
